Child Expressive Therapies

Child Expressive Therapies

When children are struggling with issues and attempts at talking do not work, engaging them with alternative approaches will often prove more helpful. Expressive therapies are those that introduce action to psychotherapy, and allow children to express themselves effectively and authentically. Expressive therapies draw from the expressive arts (play, art, drama) and integrative body-based techniques (mindfulness, sensory, and whole-brain activities). Unlike traditional art expression, expressive therapies emphasize the process of creation, rather than the final product.

When a child does not feel comfortable with talking about an issue, expressive therapies may be a useful option. The use of expressive therapies depends and transcends traditional talk therapy as it recognizes that each individual’s process is unique. Contact us to find out more how this may be a favorable and beneficial approach.

Our child therapists are Registered Social Workers with the BC College of Social Workers and are members of the BC Association of Social Workers. They have been trained in expressive therapies including art and play therapies, and use an integrative approach of both creative arts and body-based therapy interventions, such as sensory and mindfulness exercises. Our counsellors have extensive experience and can provide an alternative approach to providing support and therapy for children.
