What is Neurodiversity?
Neurodiversity is a term coined by sociologist Dr. Judy Singer and it refers to the unique development of each person's brain and how these differences affect our thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and perceptions of the world. Although every brain is unique and there is no single definition of "normal," the term neurodivergence was created to describe individuals whose neurodiversity does not align with societal expectations for what is considered "typical." We as a clinic and as neurodiversity-affirming therapists squirm at the word "typical" and we love to connect and engage with those who identify or are learning about their neurodivergence to explore and develop their typical, their experience, and enrich it in all the ways possible.
Neurodiversity as a whole refers to the diversity of human minds, the infinite variation in neurocognitive functioning within our species and it's so unique, interesting and challenging the ways we all function in the world. Neurodiversity encompasses a range of conditions that traditionally have been viewed as disorders, however overtime we are working together towards change and towards encouraging a positive acceptance of these differences as social category akin to ethnicity, socioeconomic class, sexual orientation, and more.
Our Approach to Therapy
Neurodiversity-affirming therapy (NAT) is not defined by specific interventions or actions taken by the therapist during sessions. NAT is an approach and philosophy that shapes how the therapist perceives their client and the client's experiences, similar to how trauma-informed therapy acknowledges the unique effects of trauma on an individual.
A neurodiversity-affirming therapist works under the premise that neurodivergence itself is neither a flaw nor an illness that needs to be "fixed." It is a part of a person's experience, it is a part of their life and therefore they also recognize and validate that neurodivergence can be restricting, disabling or cause difficulties in how clients experience the world.
Providing neurodiversity-affirming therapy is acknowledging and being a part of the neurodiversity movement which embraces and works with these natural neurological differences, and views any resulting disability as rooted in societal barriers, NOT as individual deficits. It is at the foundation of NAT work and the premise that our neurodiversity-affirming therapists work from.
