November 19, 2024A New Meaning for Remembrance Day
As a parent of an active CAF (Canadian Armed Forces) member serving in an active conflict zone, Veteran’s Week and Remembrance Day have taken on new meaning. From a sense of patriotism to a deeper level of empathy, the stories of tragedy and triumph have begun to change me. As I prepare to stand at the cenotaph on 11:11:11, I will do so, again, to not only exercise my civic duty but to willingly enter into a small part of the told and untold stories of those who have passed and those that remain. You are remembered.
The Impact of Service on Mental Health
Veterans Affairs Canada and the Department of Defence report that mental health can be profoundly affected by operation duties carried out by service members. It is documented that while most veterans report good mental health, there are over one-fifth that struggle with a broad range of psychological difficulties as a result of performing operation duties in Canada and abroad. This is a difficult reality for those who serve as the wrestle also becomes about overcoming stigma and the need to muster up the courage to seek help. Understanding mental health and accessibility to services can help break down the walls of isolation and open new ways forward of healing, hope and transformation. You are remembered.
