The Neuroscience of Grief

The End-of-Summer Slump:
September 9, 2025Mindfulness has been a popular topic and practice in recent years. Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to the present moment (thoughts, feelings, body sensations, and surroundings) without judging them or interpreting them. However, practicing mindfulness is not reserved to a yoga class or a very quiet and perfect moment at home. You can practice it every day, anywhere you are!
Research has shown that even 5 minutes of mindfulness can have benefits such as stress reduction, improved sleep, better emotional regulation, and better ability to focus (to name a few).
Here are some ways to practice mindfulness “on the go”
- Breathe deeply to ground yourself.
- Walk intentionally, without your phone. Listen fully in conversations.
- Finish one task before starting another.
- Notice your senses, your body, your environment.
- S.T.O.P. technique. Stop, Take a breath, Observe (sensations, thoughts, emotions), Proceed with awareness.
- Body scan.
- Mindful stretching (even just getting up from your desk and stretching your legs).
Other ways you can practice mindfulness
- Spot a moment: Notice the little pauses in your day. For example, the first sip of your coffee (or waiting for it to brew), walking to and from a certain destination, the quiet moments you may notice.
- Pause and breathe: Stop for a moment, breathe deeply, and tune in to what you are feeling and thinking. Are you holding tension anywhere? Is there a predominant emotion you are feeling? What does your body need?
- Engage your senses: What do you see, hear, feel? Stay curious and open.
These practices can become small habits that you incorporate into your daily life to move with a bit more mindfulness and awareness. You can set reminders on post it notes for yourself or even set an alarm to remind you to breathe!
Mindfulness isn’t about escaping your life or avoiding things. Instead, it helps anchor you in the now, build clarity, emotional balance, and a deeper sense of connection even in the busiest moments.
