December 27, 2025Increased Counselling Coverage for Those Who Care for Our Communities
As of November 15, 2025, thousands of BC government and community health employees gained access to additional funds for mental health care as part of a new Mental Health and Wellness Benefits package. Eligible members of the BC General Employees’ Union (BCGEU) covered by the Community Bargaining Association (CBA) will see their coverage for counselling and wellness services increase to $1000 per year.
For essential workers in the public sector and community health industry, this funding increase represents a meaningful opportunity to access additional counselling support without the added financial burden, ensuring that workers can receive the care they need when they need it.
What the New Mental Health Benefit Includes
Annual maximum of $1000 combined across services from:
- Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC)
- Registered Social Worker (RSW)
- Marriage and Family Therapist
- Registered Psychologists
- Online Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (iCBT)
Why This Increase Matters
BC’s community health workforce supports some of our province’s most vulnerable populations, with employees often managing complex caseloads and working in high-pressure, fast-paced environments where stress, emotional strain, compassion fatigue, and burnout are far too common.
Expanded mental health coverage means that workers can:
- Access counselling earlier, before issues escalate.
- Receive consistent support throughout the year.
- Build rapport, safety, and trust with a counsellor across additional sessions.
With $1000 available annually, employees have more flexibility to use mental health services as an integral component of self-care and an essential part of their overall health plan.
