The human brain is the most complex piece of physical machinery and requires quality care. Our brain holds the essential elements that make us who we are and that allow us to have a fulfilling and meaningful life. It is incredibly adaptive and responsive to change. Therapy offers many techniques for bringing about positive healing and change, but it has the most benefit when the physical aspects of brain health are also being cared for. Therapy can help with supporting these healthy habits as well!
Where to Start
Movement – According to neuroscientist, Dr Suzuki, “exercise is the most transformative thing we can do for our brain” and every drop of sweat matters. Brisk movement increases blood flow and floods the brain with neurochemicals that have powerful benefits towards improving our mood.
Real Food – Our brain thrives on nourishment. Incorporating foods rich in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals can improve cognitive function. Think of reducing processed foods and adding in more colorful fruits and vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. Put healthy snacks where you will notice them first.
Sleep – Getting adequate sleep is vital to brain health and in turn mental health. During sleep the day’s events are processed and the brain is physically cleaned. As a result, being short on sleep interrupts important biological functions and leaves you groggy and irritable. Make attempts to prioritize quality sleep by establishing a consistent sleep schedule, creating a conducive sleep environment, and taking time to unwind before bed.
Hydration – Adequate hydration also plays an important role in brain health by increasing blood flow and oxygen to the brain. Water intake supports proper brain function, including neurotransmitter synthesis, toxin removal, and regulation of mood and cognitive function. Even mild dehydration impacts the brain so keep that water close!
When it comes to Brain Health small changes create big effects!
Taking care of your brain is essential for maintaining mental health. By incorporating regular exercise, a nutritious diet, adequate sleep, and proper hydration into your daily routine, you can significantly improve cognitive function and emotional well-being. Small changes in these areas can have a profound impact. Remember, your counsellor can help you set achievable goals to support these healthy habits.
