Boundaries
April 12, 2023Are You Noticing Anything?
April 20, 2023Changes in Access to Counselling for Teachers in BC
Teachers in BC now have more support than ever when it comes to accessing mental health services. The province’s most recent agreement gives members of the BC Teachers Federation (BCTF) easier access to Registered Clinical Counselors when using their benefit plans. These changes allow teachers to find a counselor they connect with at an affordable price. The
new agreement recognizes the urgent needs of teachers when it comes to supporting their mental
health. Teachers have a tendency to focus on student needs first often while ignoring their own
needs including their mental health.
What Does This Mean for You?
Mental well-being involves the ability to think, feel and act in ways that improve our lives and deal with the challenges that come with it. If teachers neglect their own mental health needs in favor of their students it can become difficult for them to enjoy their profession.
Recently, the University of British Columbia reported that 80% of teachers reported worse mental health in 2021 than ever before. They believe this is related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Teaching is an incredibly demanding job at the best of times and research has shown that teachers across the globe experience more stress, burnout, and depression compared to other professions. This has led to one in five teachers reporting high levels of burnout while two of five have seriously considered leaving teaching within the past year.
What Can You Do?
Lack of funding, increased workload and a culture of pushing through all play a part in these devastating statistics. It is integral that teachers get the support they need. Focusing on the mental health of teachers could be a critical first step for BC school boards. They work to improve teacher well-being in the long term. Giving teachers easy access to Registered Clinical Counselors is one small way Okanagan Clinical Counseling Services hopes to help the teachers of BC. Our counselors offer support and strategies for finding balance and setting boundaries when it comes to work-life balance. We are here to provide the best care possible to ensure that you can do what you do best. Continue caring for students and creating a brighter future.
