Narrative Therapy: Re-writing Your Story
February 10, 2025Neurofeedback therapy is a way of working on our mental health in a way that considers the electrical energy in our brains.
Our brains naturally use electrical energy to function, and this electrical activity is measurable. Measuring electrical activity in the brain is sometimes done by medical professionals using an electroencephalogram, commonly called EEG. The EEG measures brain waves.
Brain waves happen inside our brains without our conscious knowledge, much like our heart beating. Although the organ of the heart beats without us thinking about it, we can learn to have some conscious effect on our heart rate if we learn calming techniques such as meditation and relaxation breathing.
Neurofeedback therapy is based on a similar idea. The idea that through using certain techniques we can have some effect on our brain waves, changing our brains. The brain’s ability to physically change itself when new information is learned is called neuroplasticity.
What does Neurofeedback Therapy Look Like?
Neurofeedback therapy is non-invasive and involves wearing a specialized device that monitors a person’s brainwaves. This is done while the person watches a video of their choosing on a screen.
In fact, the device works in a way that darkens or lightens the screen. Likewise, this can produce an effect on the brain waves. The neurofeedback therapist supports the client throughout the process.
Is there Research to Support Neurofeedback Therapy?
The effectiveness of neurofeedback therapy is still considered by some in the mental health field to be controversial. Although research providing evidence to support the treatment continues to grow. Moreover, The Canadian Psychological Association is currently in the process of setting up a Quantitative Electrophysiology Section on their website for psychologists interested in the expanding field of neuroplasticity related therapies and research.
Will Neurofeedback Therapy Help Me?
In summary, every person is unique, and it would be best to discuss your personal situation with a trained neurofeedback therapist who can work with you to answer your questions and design an approach that will best meet your needs. If you are interested in exploring this with one of our therapists, Scott Williams would be happy to connect for a free consultation
