Anni is a trauma and addiction recovery therapist and registered social worker based in Castlegar, BC, with over 20 years of experience. A resilient survivor of developmental trauma and cancer, Anni understands healing as an ongoing journey—one that can deepen purpose, vitality, and connection. She specializes in Post-Traumatic Growth (PTG), supporting individuals and groups in recovering from PTSD and rediscovering meaning and aliveness. Anni works with individuals, couples and groups.

Grounded in relational and capacity-based psychodynamic psychotherapy, expressive arts, somatic awareness, and evidence-based approaches, Anni co-creates therapeutic spaces that honour emotional regulation, agency, and authentic connection. Her practice is also enriched by 16 years of learning with Elders, Earth-based medicines, teachings, ceremony and Indigenous traditional wisdom. Maya (she/her) is a counsellor and educator whose work is rooted in care, connection, and a deep curiosity in the human experience. Grounded in a person-centred and strengths-based philosophy, Maya’s practice reflects her unwavering belief in every human’s capacity for meaningful growth.

Her primary specialties are grief and couples work. Maya is drawn to these tender spaces because loss and human connection are among the most defining experiences we share- both shaping us in ways both subtle and seismic, both impossible to avoid in a fully lived life.

Maya concurrently works as a school district counsellor with a background in school-based inclusion and case management. Allison brings over fifteen years of experience working with adults and youth navigating mental health and substance use challenges. She has worked across a range of community and clinical settings. Moreover, Allison is passionate about building meaningful, authentic connections and deeply believes that each person is the expert of their own life. With the right support, she believes we can all access our innate capacity for healing and growth.

Allison holds a Master of Social Work with a clinical specialization, as well as a Bachelor of Social Work and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology.

She approaches counselling as a space of deep trust and human connection, and is committed to providing care that is trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, and person-centred. Additionally, her approach is collaborative and compassionate, supporting clients in gaining self-understanding, discovering meaning, and creating lasting change. Drawing on a range of evidence-based therapies, she tailors her work to each individual using interventions from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), EMDR, Motivational Interviewing and Emotion-Focused Family Therapy (EFFT).

Cassandra Twiname, Pre-Licensed Counsellor

Cassandra was born and raised in rural northern BC, where her passion for nature-inspired mental health care began. Growing up in the North, mental health resources were scarce. As such, community members turned to the mountains, rivers, and forests for relief. This experience forged Cassandra’s love and admiration for nature and its healing properties. To combine her love for nature with mental health care, Cassandra completed a Bachelor of Science, Majoring in Biology (Ecology) and Psychology (Neuroscience) at Vancouver Island University. Continuing to seek nature’s gifts, Cassandra has travelled within Canada and internationally to work and recreate outdoors. This experience enabled her to work as an English teacher for children and adults in Indonesia and Vietnam, as well as a cave guide and healthcare worker in New Zealand and Australia.

Cassandra is now a practicum student at OK Clinical Therapy Group, completing a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology (MA) from Yorkville University. Through this practicum and inspired mental health care, her goal is to provide nonjudgmental and compassionate care in a space where individuals feel seen, heard, and supported. She is very excited to immerse herself in the community and learn from her colleagues and supervisor.

Erik Smyth, Practicum Student

Erik Smyth is a counselling intern with a unique blend of frontline public safety experience and academic training in mental health, sociology and criminology. Erik grew up immersed in the city’s mosaic of cultures and its wild coastal landscapes—hiking rain-soaked trails, volunteering at community events, and learning early that empathy crosses every boundary. These formative years shaped his dedication to helping others.

With 10 years of experience in law enforcement and 5 years as a firefighter, Erik has developed the ability to navigate pain, trauma, and dynamic situations with a calm, connecting presence. Working in diverse communities has further refined his cultural sensitivity, enabling him to interpret non-verbal cues across languages, connect with Indigenous peoples, and adapt his communication to meet the needs of immigrants and refugees. This depth of connection translates directly to the counselling room. Passionate about translating real-world resilience into clinical practice, Erik is dedicated to helping clients navigate their life experience, explore new lifestyles and heal.

Holding a Bachelor’s in Sociology and Criminology and working towards completing his Master’s in Counselling Psychology, Erik brings research-informed insight into social systems, behaviour, intersectionality and therapeutic practice to every session.

Amy Beedell

Kootenay Community Support

Amy is our Kootenay Community Support and moved to the Kootenays from England half a decade ago. After earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management and working in retail management, Amy decided to pursue her childhood dream of becoming a primary school teacher. The blend of experience in retail management and elementary school teaching, have both shaped her ability to create a warm, safe and supportive environment for our clients. Amy’s background in retail management has honed her organizational and communication skills. Her experience as an elementary school teacher has enhanced her empathy, patience, and ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

In her role as the Kootenay Community Support, Amy works closely with our team of counsellors to ensure that everything is in place for our counsellors to deliver the best care. Amy is keen about fostering a welcoming and compassionate space for mental health and wellness.

Outside of work, Amy is a mother to her wonderful girl. Amy loves baking, crafts, gardening and is slowly working her way through an ever-growing list of local hikes.

Nathan Hayward

Community Relations Manager

Nathan is our Community Relations Manager and focuses on building better mental health accessibility in the community.. He is an Okanagan local born and raised. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Counselling in 2016, Nathan has spent his vocational years working with charities, not-for-profits, and school districts in Kelowna, focusing on community development and fundraising. In his previous roles in the community, Nathan has seen the impact that a public-focused mental health service can have. Because of this, he is incredibly excited to be a part of the team at OCCS and make our counselling services known and accessible to all who need them.

Nathan can connect individuals, corporate teams and community organizations to help support everyone’s counselling needs. If you have any questions about connecting with our clinic for partnerships, referral systems, or other community relations-related questions, Nathan will be happy to meet with you. As one of the clinic managers, Nathan will also be happy to assist with any administrative questions or help with online bookings. Nathan can also assist with any technical issues clients may have on the website or Jane App.
