Making Counselling Work for You: A Guide to Asking for What You Need
September 15, 2025Understanding and Managing Seasonal Mood Shifts
As summer months start coming to an end, many individuals report feeling a sense of melancholy. This is commonly known and described as the “Summer Blues”. September in particular marks a shift as days start to feel cooler and shorter. Some have described August and even September as the “Sunday” of the summer. All of this creates a sense of change and can bring up some feelings of sadness and anxiety.
How to cope with the “Summer Blues”
Acknowledge your feelings
- This change in mood is common after the summer, and it does not mean that you are weak.
Reframe the narrative
- Plan the rest of your month to include exciting things you can look forward to. This can help you feel like you are making the most of summer while getting some closure.
Stay connected
- Avoid the inertia to isolate and reach out to friends and family to get together in a low-pressure way. Social connection is a proven buffer against seasonal mood changes.
Keep moving
- Gentle daily activity such as walks, swimming, biking, and gardening can support mood-regulating neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine. Even a 10-minute movement break can help!
Maintain a routine
- Summer’s lack of structure can leave us feeling unanchored. Keeping a consistent daily schedule can provide a sense of stability and purpose.
Speak to a therapist
- If feelings of sadness, fatigue, or anxiety lasts more than two weeks, or interfere with your daily life, it may be time to reach out to a counsellor to help manage these feelings.
You’re Not Alone!
Remember that while these feelings may be common, if they become burdensome and your feel unable to manage them, reaching out to a counsellor can be of great help.
