Moving Forward After Infidelity: Understanding Post-Infidelity Stress Disorder
May 13, 2024An Embodied Life
June 10, 2024What is a Sense of Self?
Many people attend therapy in hopes of learning more about themselves. In psychology, this is often referred to as developing a sense of self or self-concept. Despite their common use, understanding the concept of “self” can be confusing or even overwhelming. In this blog, we’ll talk about what these concepts can mean, why they’re important, and what you can do to better understand yourself.
What does it all mean?
Broadly, our sense of self refers to an overarching idea of who we are. Different people will emphasize different components of self like personality traits, values, actions, physical appearances, emotions, interests, spirituality, and social roles.
Our idea of who we are is shaped in part, through interactions with family members, friends, and others as we develop. While developing a sense of self is ongoing and everchanging, much of this process occurs in childhood as we have opportunities to explore, learn, and express our needs and desires.
Why is it important?
Having an understanding of who we are and what’s important to us helps us to act in aligned ways. This means having the ability to make clear decisions, set appropriate boundaries, live authentically, and work toward greater fulfilment in general.
What can we do to explore our sense of self?
- Reflect on our values and beliefs
- Engage in self-expression (in a space you feel safe)
- Experiment with making choices that feel aligned with your values
- Seek support
Uncovering your sense of self can be overwhelming and feel vulnerable. It may be helpful to seek support to identify your values, work through self-esteem issues, uncover attachment issues impacting your sense of self, treat mental health disorders, learn and practice decision making, or address any unmet needs.
